Settling your nervous system
Short resets that help your body feel safe again.
Why your body is still on alert
Living around unpredictable moods teaches your body to stay ready for the next storm. Racing thoughts, a tight chest or a jolt when your phone buzzes aren't weakness — they're a protective system that hasn't yet learned the danger has passed.
Small signals of safety
You can't think your way out of an alarm state, but you can show your body it's safe. Slow breathing, feeling your feet on the floor and noticing what's around you all send that message, a little at a time.
Try this: The 4-6 breath
- 1.Sit or stand with your feet flat on the floor.
- 2.Breathe in gently through your nose for a count of four.
- 3.Breathe out slowly through your mouth for a count of six.
- 4.Repeat five times. Notice one thing that feels even slightly calmer.
